There is one thing that you can be sure is on no one’s bucket list. The person has never lived who has said, “I want to lose my teeth and then have to worry about how to replace them. I’d love to feel unhappy about my smile, and have difficulty biting or chewing. Bone loss in my jaw would just be a bonus!”
These are just a few of the issues that you can encounter if you have missing teeth. Unless you have lost all of your teeth, you also run the risk of having the remaining teeth crowd in toward the gaps; it is nature’s way of trying to fill them.
Do Not Live with Missing Teeth
If you have missing teeth, it is important on many levels to replace them. Not only will your appearance be restored, but your dental health will improve as well. There are a number of procedures you can consider to restore missing teeth. Dentures are the most time-honored treatment, but they will not stop bone loss in your jaw. Neither will dental bridges. This is why the method dentists overwhelmingly prefer is dental implants. Not only do they prevent the loss of bone in your jaw, but they actually encourage new bone to grow. This is because once installed, your body accepts dental implants as being completely natural.
So, are you a candidate for dental implants? Most people are. There are a few medical conditions (some types of cancer, for instance, and uncontrolled diabetes) that could make implants impractical, but this is rare. Even if you have serious bone loss, you could have implants following bone grafting.
What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is nothing more than a titanium post or screw that is surgically installed in your jawbone. Once the surgical site has healed properly, and bone growth is sufficient around the screw, the dentist installs crowns – prosthetic teeth – to replace those that are missing.
At Dr. Jack Fong’s dentist office in Amarillo, TX, we only do the restorative part of dental implants. We will, however, refer you to a specialist for the surgical component.
We offer traditional dental implants, implant dentures, and implant-supported dentures. These are all permanent fixtures in your mouth, so you will never have to worry about your teeth sliding, slipping, or needing to be removed for cleaning. We are huge proponents of All on 4 implants.
With All on 4, you can actually have a full set of upper and lower crowns installed with just four dental implants in each jaw. With traditional methods, you could need eight or even more in either jaw. All on 4 requires less surgery, less healing time, and is also considerably more affordable. The cost factor is often very important to the patient, because most dental insurers consider implants to be a non-essential cosmetic dentistry procedure as opposed to a restorative procedure (even though there are obviously restorative benefits), and will not cover even part of the expense.
